laboratory index> Altnagelvin Hospitals Health and Social Services TrustAltnagelvin Hospitals Health and Social Services TrustAddressDirectorate of Pathology The HospitalAltnagelvin Area Hospital is an acute district general hospital [450 inpatient beds, 54 day case beds] serving a local population of 170,000, and an area population (providing sub-regional services) of 272,000. The planning of a new laboratory / pharmacy complex is now well advanced and building is due to commence in early 2005. In recent years there has been a rapid expansion in the range of clinical specialities provided at the hospital site and currently there are over 90 consultants. Clinical services include a wide range of medical specialities, surgical specialities, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, anaesthetics, and accident and emergency. Altnagelvin is a designated cancer unit. In addition a number of visiting specialists provide outpatient services from regional departments in Belfast. A full range of nursing, physiotherapy, laboratory, radiology, administrative, and other professional services contribute to the staffing infrastructure of the hospital. There is a multidisciplinary education centre which offers lending and reference library facilities, which are part of the Queen's University of Belfast library. The hospital is part of the QUB campus providing an undergraduate teaching programme in both pathology and clinical specialities for medical students and a full undergraduate and postgraduate programme in nursing.
