Belfast Link Laboratories (BLL)

BLL was established in 1994 as a joint directorate of laboratory medicine between the Belfast City Hospital and the Royal Group Hospital Trusts. In 2004 the organization was expanded to encompass services to the Mater Hospital Trust. Details of the individual Trusts are given below.

A comprehensive range of CPA (UK) accredited Clinical Biochemistry services are available in support of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare in the hospitals and community practices of most of greater Belfast. In addition, a range of more complex and specialised services are provided on a Province wide basis.

BLL Biochemistry maintains close working relationships with Departments of The Queens University Belfast and University of Ulster facilitating innovation through research and development, and a major role in the vocational training of all the professions within laboratory medicine – Chemical Pathologists, Clinical Scientists and Biomedical Scientists – and participation in the teaching of medical and science undergraduates.

Unified cross Trust management of Clinical Biochemistry has allowed rationalization of services appropriate to the clinical specialties on each site. General Clinical Biochemistry is carried on each site but specialties including Endocrinology, Regulatory Peptides, Paediatric Biochemistry including inborn errors, Tumour Markers, Toxicology and Trace Metals are carried out on either the BCH or RGH campus as appropriate (see below).

Constituent laboratories have been through a third cycle of CPA Accreditation. Many senior Consultant Medical, Clinical Scientist, and BMS staff, are currently accredited CPA assessors.

Contact details of Senior Laboratory staff are listed below, along with their main areas of interest. Specialist Registrars and Trainee Clinical Scientists are listed for both the BCH and RGH sites as they are rotated regularly.
