About the Biochemistry Service

The population of the Southern Health and Social Services Board is approximately 315,000. There are two acute NHS Trusts in the Area, Craigavon Area Hospital the major one with 450 beds and Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry with 350 beds.

The Clinical Biochemistry Service at both sites is managed through an Area Pathology Service with harmonised service arrangements, staffing, policies and procedures. The bulk of the work is performed in Craigavon Area Hospital Laboratory.

Clinical Services include a wide range of medical specialities, surgical specialities, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, anaesthetics and A&E. Craigavon Area Hospital is a designated cancer unit and has the Regional Renal Stone Treatment Centre and Recompression Unit.

The Department has involvement in undergraduate and post graduate training through links with Queens University, Belfast.

The Area Pathology Biochemistry Service is fully accredited by CPA (UK).
