The Trust

The Ulster Community and Hospitals Trust is a combined acute and community Trust providing a wide range of health and social care. The Trust is well placed to offer integrated health and social services, which are accessible, appropriate, and of the highest quality.

The hospital serves a population of approximately 270,000. There are 567 acute beds plus 36 adult and paediatric beds available for day procedures in the Trust.

The hospital is currently undergoing major refurbishment and a business case for a new laboratory is in progress. Completion date for new laboratory is 2007. The acute services are centralised at the Ulster Hospital with outpatient services at Ards and Bangor Community Hospitals. A wide range of medical and surgical specialties is provided. Day surgery is currently located on the Ards site.

The Ulster Hospital is one of four designated cancer units in the province with the cancer centre based at Belfast City Hospital.

Clinical Biochemistry

The Clinical biochemistry department is a conditionally accredited lab (pending new build) with an annual workload of approximately 2.5 million tests, including general biochemistry, endocrinology, paediatric biochemistry and some toxicology. A consultative, analytical and interpretive service is provided. In addition the department supervises a considerable network of near- patient testing devices both in the hospital and community.

Specific medical services provided by the medical staff of the department include diabetes and general medicine.
