Departments of Clinical Biochemistry

The population of the Northern Health and Social Services Board is approximately 500,000 and varies throughout the year due the high influx of tourists during the summer months. The Board’s population is serviced by two Biochemistry Laboratories with common functional and service arrangements, and co-ordinated policies and procedures.

In United Hospitals Trust (population 350,000), the Department provides services for primary and secondary care facilities and a range of specialist units, e.g. renal and cancer units). A wide repertoire of tests is available on-site and the laboratory provides a 24-hour emergency service and a range of point-of-care facilities. In Causeway NHS Trust (population 120,000) a more limited service is provided on a 24-hour basis to the emergency department and acute services of Causeway Hospital. Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Clinical Scientist staff provide advice and support to users of the service on a Board-wide basis.

Both Laboratory Sites are fully accredited by CPA (UK) Ltd and have fully compatible repertoires, reference ranges, policies and procedures providing seamless service to primary and secondary care users throughout the Board.
